* What are the factors that determine the cost of Snowmobile, ATV / UTV, or Boat Insurance?

When answering the question what does it cost?  The answer really is, “That Depends.”  Here are the most common factors that are taken into consideration:

  •   The garaging location, where are the units stored and how secure is the building or yard – theft is a big concern
  •   Where is the unit used?  In the case of boats, is use restricted to inland lakes, or used in the Great Lakes, or near shore in the ocean?
  •   How fast will the unit go?  What’s its maximum MPH?
  •   What are specifics of the unit?  Make, Model, Identification #, horsepower or cc size.
  •   What value will it be insured for?  And what deductible is selected…
  •   How much Liability coverage is desired or selected?
  •   What options are desired?  Towing?  Personal Articles coverage – life jackets, fishing gear, etc.
  •   What prior experience do the owners and operators of the unit have?
  •   Who are the operators of the unit?  What are their ages?  Do they have any traffic violations?

* What discounts and packages are available to maximize savings?

  •   In many cases it is worth checking with the agent or company that writes the homeowners and auto insurance coverage for multi-policy discounts.
  •   Group discounts also may be available, such as; retired person groups, or homeowner associations, or credit union or bank affiliation groups

* How much does a "High Performance" Snowmobile, ATV / UTV, or Boat increase the cost?  Units considered “High Performance” have a large effect on the cost of insurance.  If you are shopping for a new Snowmobile, ATV / UTV, or Boat you may wish to have a discussion with your insurance agent first to determine what is considered “High Performance” and make your buying decisions from that discussion.

* What are the Pro and Cons of adding recreation vehicles to my Homeowners Insurance?

  •   Pros – many times this is where the most discounts and lowest prices can be obtained.  Also you are working with an agent you already know and can keep your full insurance picture in mind as they advise you.
  •   Cons – Many homeowner and auto policies now have a no claim discount which if your recreation vehicle coverage is attached to your home policy and you submit a claim because of an accident with your recreation vehicle, the discount would be removed from both your home and recreation vehicle coverage.

* How do larger deductibles affect the cost of insurance?  They definitely do reduce the cost of insurance.  However, is the savings enough to justify the higher deductible?  For example; if the deductible is increased from $250 to $500 but the savings is $5, that probably is not enough to justify increasing the deductible.  All that can be done is to have it quoted both ways to determine if the savings is enough.

* How do you find the most competitive insurance rate for your Snowmobile, ATV / UTV, or Boat?  See my blog article - Ways Any Insurance Shopper Can Compare Competitiveness of their present policy In 24 Hours
